Panguni Uthiram Festival in Madurai

Every Tamil month has its unique features. The last tamil month "Panguni" also plays important role. "Panguni Uthiram" is the special and important occasion on this tamil month, because the marriage of Parvati and Parameshwara, Muruga and Devasena (Deivanai) and Andal and Rangamanna took place on this day. The significance of this day is that the star "Uthiram" and "Pournami (full moon)" occuring together.

Importance of Panguni Uthiram Festival

At Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, Panguni Uthiram festival is celebrated in the name of "Summer Spring Festival" (in Tamil: Kodai Vasantha Thiruvizha). This is the nine day festival at the Velliyambala Mandapam. Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar would be taken procession along the chithirai streets on this occasion.
Also, the celestial wedding of Lord Koodal Azhagar Perumal (Lord Vishnu) and His Consort Madura Valli Thaayaar (Goddesss Mahalakshmi) happens on this Panguni Uthiram day, which is called as "Koodal Azhagar Thirukkalyanam".

Thiruparankundram Panguni Uthiram Festival

Especially, Panguni Uthiram festival is dedicated to Lord Muruga, celebrated in all six abodes of Lord Subramaniah. Thiruparankundram Lord Subramaniah Swamy Temple is celebrating Panguni Uthiram festival in a grand manner every year. One among the festival is the celestial wedding of Lord Subramaniya and His Consort Deivanai (Lord Subramaniah Thirukkalyanam) would be held on Saturday, April 11, 2009. Another one is "Thiru Ther - Therottam" which is called as "Car Festival" or "Chariot Procession" would be held on Sunday, April 12, 2009. The Meenakshi Amman Temple deities Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar will be taken out to attend the celestial wedding of Lord subramaniah and His Consort Deivanai at Thiruparankundram.
